In The Footsteps of the Tian Family

Discover the rich heritage of Glodok through the journey of the Tian Family, who arrived in Batavia (now Jakarta) in the early 20th century as Chinese immigrants from Fujian Province. In this walking tour, we’ll trace the family’s migration, settlement, beliefs, and perseverance in the Glodok community throughout different political periods–from the 1930s until today.

Glodok’s alleys have long been quiet spectators of history. Some stories are brighter than the rest, some are heavier to hold. In this walk through time, we’ll uncover how shifting political situations have been shaping the facades and soul of the neighbourhood—from 1740, 1965, 1998, until today. Witness how a neighborhood, once scorched, found ways to heal and carry on through everyday acts of resilience and rebuilding.

Amidst Jakarta’s bustling streets, taste always finds its way to lead us back to the warmth of the dining table. In this culinary exploration, we’ll discover how the city’s diverse flavors have been growing, adapting, and evolving alongside its extensive history of cultural amalgamation. To close the walk, we’ll gather around and celebrate togetherness over curated dishes from the neighborhood.

An intimate walking tour that approached Chinese-Indonesian history as intimate history, passed through generations. Metta's storytelling was moving and personal – inviting reflection on what history forgets, and who gets to remember.

We walked through parts of Glodok, which we have visited often, but saw them completely different through the stories shared by Metta. The tour ended at MET Glodok, a relaxed spot to sit, chat, and reflect with the group over food and conversation.

The "Forged in Flames" tour was a full-on sensory hit: voices, smells, people, and stories of Glodok all came at once. And somehow, it made me feel like I was part of it.
